Emerson’s Pervasive Sensing Center to help refineries, chemical plants and other industrial producers operate more efficiently, safely, reliably and profitably
November 18, 2014, Singapore – Fueled by strong customer demand to bolster reliability, productivity and energy efficiency among industrial process facilities in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region, Emerson Process Management is today opening its first regional Pervasive Sensing Center of Excellence. With an investment of USD 10 million, this is the company’s first such Center globally.
Emerson’s “pervasive sensing” strategy combines the company’s leadership in sensor and wireless technologies for industrial process facilities with its application expertise and data analytics to provide better and actionable data that extends beyond traditional process controls to other functions, such as site safety and energy management.
Emerson is working with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) to provide “pervasive sensing” pilot projects, training and testing capabilities for companies, and to provide educational opportunities for college students, with an end objective of helping industrial companies become more energy efficient.
“Our Pervasive Sensing Center of Excellence is a first for Emerson Process Management in Singapore and globally,” said Sabee Mitra, president of Emerson Process Management Asia Pacific. “This Center is needed because every day we hear from companies about the challenges of site safety, reliability, security and energy efficiency. The process industries often don’t have the resources or expertise to adopt new technologies that are critical to keeping their plants up and running. Our Center will create solutions that will help customers globally address these challenges and operate more efficiently and profitably.”
The Emerson Pervasive Sensing Center of Excellence will employ approximately 50 people. Combined with the company’s extensive Asia-Pacific local service capabilities, the Center enables the company to remotely perform data collection, analysis, and consulting for Asia-Pacific customers. These services help the process manufacturing industries meet their operational goals without having to add additional resources, conduct costly training and manage maintenance procedures for new automation technologies.

Emerson is working with major customer facilities on Jurong Island to initiate energy efficiency, reliability and productivity services, with the intent of reinforcing Jurong Island’s reputation as the location for some of the safest, most productive and energy efficient industrial facilities in the world. The three--phased rollout of the Center will expand Emerson’s pervasive sensing services through pilot projects, then throughout Jurong Island and ultimately beyond Singapore.
