Non-Intrusive, Clamp-on Ultrasonic Technologies

Emersons Flexim non-intrusive ultrasonic flow measurement technologies measure virtually anything that flows: liquids as well as gases and steam. Our proprietary clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters enable operators to simply attach the transducer to the outside of the pipe – without any interruption to operations or any risk of leakage. Our products meet the maximum requirements of industrial production and safety, and deliver the highest level of plant availability.

Measurement Principles

FLUXUS® clamp-on ultrasonic systems determine the volumetric flow rate according to the transit-time difference method. Since the ultrasonic signal that is irradiated into the pipe is carried by the fluid flowing inside, a time delay occurs between the acoustic transit time both with and against the flow of direction. This time delay can be measured very accurately. The transmitter calculates the volumetric flow rate based on the parameters input for the pipe geometry and the physical properties of the fluid stored in the internal database.

Proven Accuracy

The reliability and accuracy of measuring systems depend on the quality of their manufacturing and calibration. Consistent quality management according to DIN ISO 9001 is essential for Flexim, which has a calibration laboratory certified to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018. Flexim is also the only manufacturer of ultrasonic flow meters that calibrates transmitters and sensor pairs independently from each other with its own, patented AperCal method. The calibration, traceable to national standards, is not being performed on a flow rig and thus, it eliminates uncertainties of pipe or installation characteristics.

Non-Intrusive Ultrasonic

The Flexim FLUXUS® non-intrusive ultrasonic flow meters are used wherever something flows. Clamp-on technology opens up an unrivaled wide range of applications as the FLUXUS® device reliably measures the flow of virtually any fluid, be it liquid, gas or steam, regardless of the flow direction (bi-directional) and over an extremely wide measuring range. Due to its practical advantages, external flow measurement with clamp-on ultrasonic transducers has become a standard measuring technique in a broad range of industries and applications.

Diagnostic Insight: Advanced Meter Verification

Advanced Meter Verification (AMV) allows you to check the health of your Flexim flow measurement device directly on site without the need for process interruption. This saves cost, while ensuring the performance of your non-intrusive flow measurement. The continuous acquisition and permanent storage of diagnostic values by the transmitter enables regular verification. Based on this data, maintenance can be planned, and unexpected failures can be avoided. Operators can automatically generate a flow meter verification report, providing the documentation required for your quality management system.

Letting our experienced service technicians carry out flow measuring tasks at your site can save you considerable resources that can be used on more efficiently on other duties.

Our flow meter services are arranged according to your individual needs:

  • From the measurement of volumetric and mass flow rates of liquids and gases over a wide media, temperature, and pressure range;

  • Over the energy survey of heat and cold quantities or also the consumption of compressed air within your site;

  • Up to flow measurements at high temperature pipes up to 1166 °F (630 °C).

Depending on the region, these services include on-site measurements, laboratory analysis, project handling, training, commissioning, instrument rentals and consulting services.

Gas Applications

FLUXUS® G gas flow meter series from the Emerson Flexim portfolio sets the standards for non-intrusive ultrasonic gas metering. Clamped onto the outside of the pipe wall, these bi-directional gas flow measurement devices measure any kind of gas. They are available as both portable and stationary types. By integrating additional process parameters such as pressure and temperature, FLUXUS® gas flowmeters also provide high precision measurement of mass flow rate as well as operational and standard volumetric flow rates. FLUXUS® G is also the flow meter of choice wherever gas poses a hazard, be it explosive, toxic, or chemically aggressive.

Liquid Applications

Flexim FLUXUS® F ultrasonic liquid flow meters measure the flow rate of liquids non-intrusively with transducers mounted on the outside of the pipe. They are available as both portable and stationary types. Emerson Flexim can supply basic ultrasonic liquid transmitters for non-intrusive flow measurement of water, special measuring systems for high-precision recording of the lowest flow rates, for flow measurement of cryogenic to really high temperatures, or even for use in potentially explosive areas or submerged under water. Emerson Flexim is also the only supplier of SIL2-certified clamp-on ultrasonic transducers for use for safety functions.

Steam Applications

Emerson Flexim has paved the way for the non-intrusive flow measurement of steam with clamp-on ultrasonic technology. FLUXUS® ST-LT measures volumetric and mass flow rates of saturated and superheated steam at temperatures up to 180 °C (356 °F ) using the transit-time difference principle. The system is available as both a stationary and a portable meter. The stationary FLUXUS® ST-HT has been specifically engineered for high-temperature applications above 240 °C (464 °F) and is based on the correlation flow measurement method. In combination with the WaveInjector® mounting fixture, FLUXUS® ST-HT systems push our solutions for clamp-on ultrasonic steam measurement up to 630 °C (1,166 °F)!

Compressed Air

Measuring compressed air flows precisely in all conditions with a high-pressure air flow meter is the key to improving the energy efficiency of compressed air systems while reducing costs.

Using state-of-the-art technology, the non-intrusive FLUXUS® CA ultrasonic air flow meter series offers a permanent or portable solution that is ideally suited for carrying out energy audits, metering the consumption of compressed air, checking existing meters, detecting potential leaks, balancing plant networks as well as monitoring compressor efficiency.

Thermal Energy

Based on Flexim's clamp-on flow measurement technology, FLUXUS® TE combines the volumetric meter and energy calculator in just one transmitter. Equipped with up to 2 flow measuring channels and up to 4 temperature inputs, it delivers measured values such as current flow or mass flow rate, thermal energy rate, temperatures and also corresponding counter functions.

Applications such as heating, and cooling can be easily implemented.

Extreme Temperatures

The Flexim WaveInjector® technology is used in extreme temperatures. The patented transducer mounting device separates the ultrasonic transducers thermally from the pipe thereby extending the application range of non-intrusive clamp-on ultrasonic technology to temperatures of -200 to 630 °C (-328 to 1166 °F). So much heat is radiated or absorbed via its metallic coupling plates that the temperature of the transducer clamping fixture lies within the working range of the ultrasonic transducers. The WaveInjector® is also mounted on the outside of the pipe without having to open the pipeline. Since it is a purely mechanical arrangement, the WaveInjector® can also be used in potentially explosive areas.

Process Analytics

Emerson Flexim mass flow meters measure the flow velocity, and they use the sound speed to determine concentration or density of binary liquid solutions. Combining both flow and density the PIOX S provides a mass flow rate reading. Typical applications are sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, caustics, brines, and nitrogen fertilizer products. The clamp-on technology with no wetted parts is ideal for analyzing challenging fluids. When only density and concentration measurements are required, Flexim offers the PIOX® R inline process refractometer. It combines the long-established concept of the concentration meter with the innovative transmitted light principle. This unique technology provides online concentration with outstanding precision. Both systems can also be used in combination, to analyze more complex media in customer specific applications.

Industry and Application Versatility
