Remove Toxic Ammonia from Wastewater Streams

The advanced treatment of sewage after the aeration basins may include a two step process of nitrification and denitrification for the removal of nitrogen. The majority of nitrogen is in the form of ammonia and can be toxic to aquatic life. Nitrifying bacteria in nitrification basins converts ammonia to nitrates, and denitrifying bacteria converts nitrates to nitrogen gas, which is removed. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is critical for nitrification and denitrification as the microorganisms consume oxygen to grow and thrive. The concentration of dissolved oxygen is measured and controlled by bubbling air or oxygen up from the bottom of the basins. The oxygen concentration must remain high enough to support the microorganisms, but feeding too much oxygen to the basin results in a costly waste of pump power.
