Clean-in-Place (CIP) & Steam-in-Place (SIP) Solutions
CIP and SIP solutions and systems reliably clean equipment with processes that optimize chemical use and minimize cleaning time for limited disruption.
Ensuring the efficacy of CIP/SIP processes for a biomanufacturing facility requires precise measurement and control. Without the right systems in place, managing the sequencing of lines and vessels for cleaning while optimizing production can become a scheduling challenge. Emerson’s process equipment and control systems provide a lower-cost, regulatory-compliant solution that increases efficiency, improves safety by reducing cross-contamination, and offers greater assurance of product quality.
Effective sterilization of a facility’s lines and vessels is largely dependent on CIP/SIP processes reaching and maintaining specific temperatures. Deviations in temperature or inaccurate readings from faulty equipment can diminish the efficacy of these processes and lead to contamination that results in loss of product. Emerson’s comprehensive set of temperature management technologies ensures accurate, repeatable temperature measurements with robust equipment that withstands harsh conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Clean-in-Place Steam-in-Place
CLEAN IN PLACE
The process for cleaning production facilities (tanks, pipes, machines) without dismounting by means of a parallel water (and cleaning agents) circuit. To guarantee compliance with hygienic standards in food and beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, the cleaning process uses different cycles with washing and rising agents which could be automatically controlled by an automatic programmer. This cleaning in place is launched immediately after production to avoid a contamination and the proliferation of bacteria.
STEAM (STERILIZATION) IN PLACE
For some of the processes, Clean In Place is not enough, and sterilization is required to destroy all microbial germs in the installation by adding a cycle with steam (and disinfectants) after the clean in place phase.
The food and beverage as well as the pharmaceuticals industries frequently use CIP and SIP because cleaning is imperative. Manual cleaning and the cost of down time would not have optimal ROI – therefore CIP and SIP was the obvious solution. CIP and SIP allow the cleaning and the sterilization of the piping and process equipment without having to dismount them.
Manual cleaning lacks consistency and manual monitoring and reporting is prone to human errors. Clean in place cycles can also consume significant amounts of media and energy and any unplanned downtime can directly impact production. Emerson is continuously improving their expertise and efficiency with CIP and SIP. Whether the user needs more effective decision making with analysis and visualization, insights into mobility tools, information and prescribed actions or even help seeing measurable inputs in temperature, flow or position, Emerson can help.
The CIP reports completion in three ways. First, the operator station will have an alert. Second, a text message can be sent to plant personnel. Finally, a comprehensive report can be emailed to key personnel anywhere within the organization.
At a minimum, sensors required are conductivity or pH, flow rate and temperature. To optimize the system, we would suggest level measurement for the chemical and recovery tanks, differential pressure across filters, fluid density.
Clean-in-place (CIP) processes are vital to operations, but they can also be a major source of inefficiencies. Josh Friesz discusses CIP optimization and how conductivity sensors can help you manage the transition between steps in your CIP program.
A best practice tutorial that demonstrates to users in pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries how effective conductivity measurement in CIP operations can help save time and costs, reduce water and chemical usage, and mitigate risk to product quality and consumer safety.
Selecting the correct instrumentation can help to optimize your CIP process and reduce overall operating costs. In this presentation we will discuss common CIP efficiency challenges and discuss the proper instrumentation to overcome these challenges.
