Segmented Ball Valves

Segmented Ball Valves

Fisher segmented ball valves provide high capacity, precise control across a broad range of applications.

What is a Segmented Ball Valve?

A segmented ball valve is similar to a conventional ball valve, but with a contoured V-notch segment in the ball. This control valve has good rangeability, control, and shutoff capability. The V-notch ball provides positive shearing action and produces an inherent equal percentage flow characteristic. It provides non-clogging, high capacity flow control. The V-notch ball has been specially contoured to maximize capacity and enhance seal life and shutoff integrity.

How It Works

Common Applications

V-notch ball control valve bodies are suited to control erosive or viscous fluids, paper stock, or other slurries containing entrained solids or fibers. The paper industry, chemical plants, sewage treatment plants, the power industry, and petroleum refineries use such valve designs.

Valve Components

The two-piece shaft allows for an enlarged center flow path. A drive shaft is connected to one side of the segmented ball and a follower shaft is connected to the opposite side. As the drive shaft is rotated, the ball rotates to expose a flow path through the V-notch. This V-notch allows for a large flow range due to small flow area at low travel and a large flow area at maximum travel.

Two types of body end connections are available for segmented ball valves, flangeless or flanged.

To meet specific application requirements, a variety of metal and soft ball seal materials are available.

Expanded Outlet Version

The expanded outlet version of the V-notch ball valve accommodates expanded downstream piping. Its outlet flange is one standard line size diameter larger than the inlet and is designed for control of medium consistency fiber slurries.

Erosive Slurry Control

This slurry version of the V-notch ball valve contains erosion-resistant trim components that protect the body from erosive wear. Its body liner, V-notch ball, and flow ring are all constructed of high-chromium iron, which provide protection against erosive flow. A ceramic flow ring insert is available for especially aggressive slurry services.
