Pervasive Sensing™ technologies improve operational visibility to solve problems in safety, reliability, production, energy management and environmental compliance.
Emerson has expanded its Pervasive Sensing portfolio of sensors and analytics to help manufacturers harness the power of Industrial IoT to improve plant performance. As companies seek to increase utilization of software for health and performance analytics, intelligent sensors provide the data experts need for improved decision making. This increasingly robust network of sensing and automation technologies features more than 50 wireless devices and wireless monitoring of temperature, pressure and power consumption, as well as detection of vibration, corrosion and leaks, among others.
The Pervasive Sensing portfolio has evolved with a new generation of low-cost sensors that are easy to install and maintain, take advantage of wireless communications as part of a secure, integrated industrial network and use new analytic algorithms to create insights into the performance of a plant’s assets.
By enhancing and adding sensor points to a plant’s infrastructure, critical information on assets and processes can be collected and analyzed in real time by powerful applications that rely on embedded analytics to transform vast amounts of information into actionable insights. Getting the right information to the right people at the right time can transform a reactive operation into a proactive one, effectively lowering risk and driving profitability.
Emerson’s Pervasive Sensing is part of its Plantweb™ digital ecosystem, next-generation Industrial IoT architecture. The Plantweb digital ecosystem strategically interprets information harvested and analyzed by innovative sensing technologies.
Emerson’s expanding portfolio of Pervasive Sensing technologies includes capabilities in hazardous gas sensing and level sensing, as well as the ability to extend wired data to a wireless network.
Wireless toxic gas monitoring
Emerson’s Rosemount™ 928 Wireless Toxic Gas Monitor is the world’s first integrated WirelessHART® toxic gas detection solution. Maintaining remote sites like wellheads and natural gas metering stations is difficult and dangerous because workers may be exposed to unplanned releases of toxic gas. Due to the prohibitive costs to install and operate conventional gas detection systems at these sites, operators have been forced to rely on portable gas detection devices or, even worse, carry on with no gas detection at all. In all these cases, workers may run the risk of exposure when approaching these remote sites to perform maintenance.
The gas monitor keeps operators updated on changing field conditions remotely – reducing manual operator rounds and improving safety by keeping personnel out of hazardous areas and safeguarding against catastrophic events.
Remote sites and previously unmonitored portions of existing facilities can now continuously monitor for the presence of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas to protect facilities and more importantly, help keep personnel safe.
Wireless Guided Wave Radar
The Rosemount 3308 Wireless Guided Wave Radar (GWR) transmitter for continuous level and interface monitoring has been redesigned for +/- 3mm accuracy, which
better meets the need for level monitoring in remote or difficult to reach locations replacing less reliable or manual technologies thereby increasing safety by keeping people off tanks.
GWR transmitters are widely used for a broad range of measurement and control applications. These include process level measurement in vessels and storage tanks in refineries, oil fields, offshore platforms, chemical and industrial plants. For example, in well-production applications, GWR transmitters are used to measure the level in tanks used for the storage of production, delivery water and injection chemicals. Accurate and reliable level instrumentation helps avoid the risk of oil spills that impact the environment and require expensive labor and equipment to clean up.
Wireless THUM™ Explosion-proof Adapter
The Wireless THUM™ Adapter has been certified explosionproof for U.S. and Canada. to operate in hazardous areas. This certification is especially useful for refineries, chemical plants, and other heavy industry facilities, as well as in SIS applications, where it can be used to access stranded variables and diagnostics from safety systems.
The THUM Adapter retrofits onto existing 2-, 3- or 4-wire HART devices, in almost every area, from intrinsically safe to explosionproof. The THUM Adapter wirelessly transmits HART measurement and diagnostic information from new or previously inaccessible measurement points. With the self-organizing WirelessHART® network, devices can be remotely managed and device health can be monitored.
