Ethernet-APL Connectivity

Simple

2-wire, powered Ethernet based on IEEE and IEC standards streamlines design, configuration, installation, and maintenance by extending proven Ethernet technology to field devices.

Trusted

Ethernet has become the dominant technology for connectivity worldwide since its introduction in the 1980s thanks to its ability to leverage different physical layers from copper and fiber cabling to Wi-Fi.

Ethernet-APL is the logical extension for Ethernet for industrial instrumentation. It provides the attributes required for reliable operation at the field device level in processing facilities.


High-Speed

Ethernet-APL communicates through two wires up to one kilometer at 10 MBit/second simultaneous communications in both directions (full duplex). The trunk provides optional high power and signal levels up to one kilometer, and spurs carry lower power with optional intrinsic safety for runs up to 200 meters. 

This communication bandwidth is more than 300 times faster than current technologies, such as Profibus PA and Foundation fieldbus.


Flexible

Ethernet-APL supports numerous digital communications protocols such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP™, HART-IP®, OPC UA, Modbus® TCP/IP, and other higher-level protocols to enable a wide range of devices and to get data where it needs to go across the entire ecosystem.

Based on a managed switch network architecture, a power budget of up to 0.5 Watt per field device, and data traffic at 10 Mbit/s, Ethernet-APL provides high scalability with the number of Ethernet-APL switches and instruments that can be connected.
