About Thermowells

Thermowells (1) are closed-end metal tubes installed pressure-tight into process vessels or piping, protecting temperature sensors (2) from harsh industrial process conditions, such as flow-induced stress, high pressure and corrosive chemicals. Additionally, thermowells allow the sensor to be easily removed from the process for calibration or replacement without requiring a process shutdown. Based on the stem profile, you can optimize your thermowells for response time or robustness. For the most accurate temperature measurement, size your thermowell to place the tip in the center of the pipe.

Welded (1):

  • Used for high flow rates, pressures and temperatures

Flanged (2):

  • Used for high pressure/high flow rate processes

Threaded (3):

  • Most common, easiest installation, threaded into port on process

Van Stone (4):

  • Two-piece design, ideal for corrosive applications requiring exotic metal thermowells

Stepped (1):

  • Best thermal response time
  • Least robust profile
  • Produces lowest drag force

Tapered (2):

  • Good thermal response time
  • Good strength
  • Produces high drag force

Straight (3):

  • Slowest thermal response time
  • Most robust profile
  • Produces highest drag force

Twisted (4):

  • Patented Rosemount design
  • Used in high velocity and high accuracy control applications
  • Most robust thermowell design that allows for proper stem immersion in the pipe
  • Best results when it comes to suppressing harmful vortex shedding induced vibrations

Rosemount Thermowell Design Accelerator

Eliminate the #1 Pain Associated with Thermowell Design

On average, engineers spend 50 hours calculating thermowells per project. Temperature points often need 3-4 recalculations per thermowell tag with traditional trial-and-error methods to pass ASME standards.

The Rosemount Thermowell Design Accelerator is a free online thermowell calculation tool that allows you to execute thermowell calculations up to 90% faster and reduces design time to just 15 minutes. It’s easy to use and guides you through complex projects, saving hours of wasted labor and resources. Calculations use ASME PTC-19.3 TW criteria for safe results to protect processes and the people that operate them.

Mass Uploads of Thermowell Tags

The Accelerator allows you to upload up to 1,000 thermowell tags in a single click. Use our easy Microsoft® Excel template if multiple calculations are needed or choose to upload each calculation manually.

Thermowell Calculations

For the Accelerator to perform calculations, you can choose between the following:

  • Auto Revision: The Accelerator will automatically make changes to the dimensional parts of each failed thermowell and continue to perform calculations until the thermowells pass.
  • Single Calculation: You make all changes to each failed thermowell before the Accelerator performs each round of calculations.

All passing calculations will comply with the ASME PTC 19.3-TW standard.

Alternate Solutions

If the Accelerator cannot find an acceptable thermowell design, it will recommend alternative technologies, suggesting either the Rosemount Twisted Square™ Thermowell or Rosemount X-well™ Technology, always ensuring you result in a safe and reliable solution.

Automated Troubleshooting Assistance

The Thermowell Design Accelerator will alert you with any calculation errors and suggest changes to the thermowell length, diameter, and type to help allow the calculations to pass.

Product Model Recommendations and Reports

Once all thermowells pass and calculations are complete, the Accelerator will provide you with valid Rosemount sensor and thermowell product models. This helps ensure you move forward with error-free designs and avoids the difficulty of building your own product models from catalogs or product data sheets. You will also receive detailed calculation reports that show how your thermowells were optimized for process conditions.

Inventory Optimization

This feature allows you to standardize thermowell product models, decreasing the number of unique thermowell product models in your inventory by up to 65% and reducing the number of design drawings for both your thermowells and sensors.

The process is simple. Once the Accelerator has completed thermowell calculations, select which thermowells you would like to optimize. The Accelerator will then consolidate models into a group of configurations that are of the same pipe size, thermowell mounting type, and thermowell material. You can make adjustments as necessary and then the Accelerator will optimize.

You can learn more about this inventory optimization process in this video.

ASME PTC 19.3 TW – 2016

About ASME PTC 19.3 TW

Temperature is the most measured variable in process the industry. Even small measurement errors can have a detrimental effect on efficiency, energy consumption, product quality or safety.

ASME provides 4 quantitative criteria for efficient and safe design: Frequency, Dynamic Stress, Steady State Stress and Hydrostatic Pressure Limits.

Emerson's Rosemount Thermowell Design Accelerator conforms to the PTC 19.3 TW standards to continue serving designers as ASME founders started more than century ago.
