Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detection

Principles of Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detection

Ultrasonic gas leak detection uses acoustic sensors to identify fluctuations in noise that is imperceptible to human hearing within a process environment. The sensor and electronics are able to detect these ultrasound frequencies (25 to 100KHz), while excluding audible frequencies (0 to 25KHz). Unlike traditional gas detectors that measure the accumulated gas, ultrasonic gas detectors “hear” the leak, triggering an early warning system.

How It Works

The sensors respond to sound generated by escaping gas at ultrasonic frequencies. Gas leak rate is mainly dependent on the size of the leak and the gas pressure. In most facilities, the majority of process noise is in the audible range, while only limited ultrasonic noise is generated in normal operation. Highly pressurized gas releases produce ultrasound (25 - 100 kHz) that the ultrasonic sensors are able to pick up despite the presence of audible noise.

HSE data indicates a significant number of gas leaks go undetected by traditional fire and gas systems.

  • 62% of total gas leaks detected by flame & gas system
  • 38% remaining releases mainly detected by personnel

The latest ultrasonic sensing technologies use a resonant sensor vs. traditional technology using a moving metal diaphragm (microphone). The active sensor element is a piezo-electric material (which converts mechanical deformation into electrical voltage) embedded in a ceramic medium. The sensors have an extremely high chemical resistance and a wide frequency range response band. The ultrasonic gas leak detector can be mounted in any orientation. Its sensor design has no moving parts so wear and tear is completely eliminated.

The Rosemount Incus Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector is equipped with four of these piezo-electric sensors, covering a maximum range of 131.2 ft (40 m) radius from the detector. Each ultrasonic gas leak detector leaves the factory calibrated for life and will never expire. There is no zeroing or calibration required and no consumptive sensor elements to replace, ever.

Ultrasonic gas leak detection technology constantly monitors wide areas with advanced acoustic sensors specially tuned to process ultrasound emitted from pressurized gas leaks. Ultrasonic gas leak detectors don't wait until a hazardous gas concentration has accumulated or the gas cloud has made physical contact with a gas sensor. The response time is instantaneous for all gas types. Since ultrasonic gas leak detectors are immune to poisoning, they never require field calibration, and all intermittent sources of background ultrasound noises may be ignored by time delay settings.
